In 2005, my mom moved to New York City to be closer to family. She grew up in New York so this was a bit of a homecoming. My parents had moved to Colorado back in ~1949.
In 2005, during the Katrina and Rita hurricanes, my mom was recovering from a stroke -- the second in less than two months! Before she was ready to move, my brothers and I took turns taking care of my mom in her home in Colorado. One day, a friend visited with her five-year-old granddaughter, Katrina. The doorbell rang and another visitor arrived. I had the pleasure of introducing them to Katrina and Rita (my mom)!
A few weeks later, the movers came to pack up mom's household and then a couple days later, we drove two hours to the Denver airport. My older brother had carefully measured and counted all the suitcases to be sure they would fit in his car. It was quite a trip and quite a packing adventure . . . never to be forgotten. In the end, we had room to spare in the back of the car -- a huge surprise to us all!
This airport snapshot did not quite match my memory of the mountain of luggage. It was taken with my cell phone and edited on IrfanView to add an unreal quality which is exactly how I felt leaving Colorado knowing my mom would no longer be there. Colorado was originally my father's dream but, over time, she embraced that dream, too. This photo also reminds me of my mom's aplomb and adventuresome approach to the move -- she amazed us all!
