Many years ago, when I got all done with this Dear Jane block, J2 - Picture Perfect, I was disappointed. The white strips are wonky and way to wide. To see how it should look, visit here. Anina also provides directions for one way to make this block. I made this block long before blogs were popular; I was figuring this out mostly on my own with some assistance from another quilter. I had a lot to learn. The only way I could begin to get this block to come out the way I wanted was to piece the big pieces by machine and then I appliqued the white stripes.
Many blocks later, the woman who was helping me, suggested handpiecing. What a difference! I enjoy making the Dear Jane Blocks so much more and the results were so much better.
Time has passed and I think this block has it's own charm. Even though I still love the little Japanese dolls, this block will probably be remade. That has more to do with the colors than the construction faults. I've decided that my Dear Jane quilt will be done in pastel pinks, yellows, and greens with tiny touches of red. I'd like to do it with the dolls again, using pink for the large pieces. I love the red and pink combo.
Here's the hard part, the doll fabric has lots of dolls but only a few tiny ones, so I'm not even sure if I have enough for my second try. I've not worked on any Dear Jane blocks for months and months. I'm getting tempted by this block.
