Yesterday, I considered cutting up this old summer top from the 1990's. The trim is actually deep periwinkle -- not blue.
I've not worn it in years but saved it because I love the way I finished the neckline and armholes. The facings are attached inside-out, raw edges are turned under -- as straight edges instead of curves -- and held in place with French knots (5 or 6 per inch). I believe I used silk thread for the knots. Both fabrics are cotton. The knots will add a fun texture to the quilt.
I've been thinking about the the medallion quilts that I wrote about yesterday. One important lesson of those quilts is that you do not have to use every fabric in every border in order for the fabrics and colors to work together in the final quilt. Observe the fascinating color evolution of this medallion quilt. That said, I'm pretty sure this sleeveless top will be cut up and made into centers for crazy log cabin blocks. The question is will those blocks be the final border or something closer to the center?
Honor the Drama
Overnight, I decided I need to use black next to the medallion. Black makes the grays, whites, and ivories pop. I was trying to go light and serene but this may not be the quilt for light and serene. I'm slowly accepting that it's destined for more drama than I'm currently feeling, so I need to go with that. To humor myself, I'm playing with a serene color combo for a future quilt. So many ideas and so little sewing!
