Where Have All the Flowers Gone?

110 blocks
After completing my latest Dear Jane block, D10 - Battlefield, I realized that it has 42 pieces. No wonder it took me so long!

The FabricsI knew I needed a relatively solid fabric for this block or else all the piecing would "fall away." This lesson came to me while working on my previous block. It's annoying to put a lot of effort into a block and not have your work show because you chose the wrong fabric.
I considered this fabric because it reminds me of combat fatigues but I was afraid it might do it's "fatigue thing" and make carefully pieced green trianges blend in with the ivory ones. After all the work, I like my blocks to be easy to "read." Perhaps I was too cautious, but I kept looking. When I found this fabric a song popped into my head and I new I had found more than what I was looking for!

The Song
"Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" was written by Pete Seeger and Joe Hickerson. I encourage you to visit Wikipedia to learn about Seeger's original inspiration, a Ukrainian folk song. The most surprising fact is that the first person to perform the song is Marlene Deitrich. In case you've not heard it, or you want to hear it again, here's a recent recording by Joan Baez. Search around on YouTube and you will find recordings by everyone from Pete Seeger to Dolly Parton! While they do not credit both writers, the lyrics are here.

The Photo
I took this photo on an overcast day. The details of the fussy cutting do not show. The sun came out today but I got lazy and did not do a re-shoot. Lately, I've been cropping my photos of my Dear Jane blocks so they can be seen as they will look after they are set into the quilt. This block was not cooperating -- so it's cropped a bit larger. The block is a little bit wonky at the corners, and I could not seem to frame the block square.
