I'm still exploring my options on this WIP and welcome your comments and suggestions. I want this 22" x 40" piece to be the center of a bed quilt.
The centerpiece is sewn. The "cobblestones" (next photo) are sewn but not attached to each other. All the rest is unsewn. Here are the latest options. Click on the photos to enlarge them.
A. [No photo.] Add more "framed blocks" using the cobblestones as the centers and light fabrics for the frames. Here's a closeup of the cobblestones.

B. Add tightly packed cobblestones on one side. I like the contrast of the "order" and "disorder."

.
C. Add a dark frame. I find this striking but too easy. I'm already bored with it.

E. Radka Donnell influence -- added lighter borders. Some of this works and some of it needs help. The centerpiece is able to breath.

F. Took out the black fabrics and added cobblestones. Was it stronger with the black line?
I'm conflicted about the last two options. I do asymmetry all the time when I paint but in a quilt, it's new for me. Maybe it's time for "Plan G"!

I definitely vote for assymmetry. The symmetry almost seems odd in option E, or maybe it is just that fabric?
What about separating the cobblestone section from the centerpiece? You would probably need to frame the cobblestones with something darker to get the balance in size. Then you could use the large print or other fabric as borders around each?
I'm not a designer ... just a quilter ;-). If it were mine, I would use it in the center, but turned horizontal. Then I would use the lighter color and make a big wide border ... then use the tighter blocks as a pretty decent size border outside the the lighter color ... make sure you share with us what you ended up doing!
