More Border Play

I'm back to the black and white quilt. My decisions are coming slow but sure. As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions.

Gee's Bend
Today, I volunteered at the NEQM and used some quiet time to browse through two book about the quilts and quilters of Gee's Bend. Try this link to learn more about Gee's Bend, the quilters and their quilts. It has a bunch of links. You might also enjoy this video about the Gee's Bend quilts and quilters. I hope to get another chance to see the Gee's Bend quilts in person since I missed them when they toured the country. I love those quilts and turned to the books for inspiration.

New Ideas
If you want to see previous posts where I play with design ideas for the black and white quilt, visit my postings for July 24, July 26, Aug 1, and Aug 2. In the latter, I considered cutting up a garment that I designed and sewed many years ago, but no longer wear. Right after I posted that entry, I got brave and cut it up! In the photo above, you can see the resulting periwinkle "scraps" sprinkled along the right side of the photo. That's my latest border idea.

Black Next to the Medallion
I know I will place black next to the the central medallion -- on all four sides. I just don't know if it will be the fabric on the left side of the photo (above) or something more solid. Any suggestions?

Japanese Dominos
I love this Japanese fabric. I've named it Japanese Dominos. It's ivory (not white), and that's one reason it echos the medallion so well. It's not cheap but it's a keeper -- and will likely be one of the the border fabrics.
.
Square It Up
I've pretty much decided that I need to add a row of blocks to one or two of the medallion sides so that it's closer to a square. I'm thinking of using some of the periwinkle scraps for the centers of those blocks. I have some special ones that would be real nice for that placement.
Cobblestones
It's starting to look like the cobblestones (use links above to the July and August postings) will not be part of this quilt top. I'm feeling like I'll be stuck working on black and white quilts forever. Maybe the cobblestones will end up on the back of this quilt.
