I made these several years ago for my mom. I don't remember too many details but I think maybe I used two different yarns.
When I tried to felt the mittens, they did not seem to want to be felted. I tried everything. I put them on my hands and pretended I was washing my hands using lots of detergent. Next I tried putting them in the washing machine with several loads of wash . . . more than once. Still, they were not really felted and they were too big. In desperation, I put them in the dryer which made them the right size. They are not felted as much as I like (you can still see the individual knitting stitches), which probably has something to do with my choice of yarns. I'm pretty sure that this is as good as it's going to get. The good part is that they are quite thick and sturdy -- a great shield again winter winds! My mother loved them and now my niece enjoys them.
